Film, Land Use & Other Permits

Permits are required for conducting scientific activities on MMWD watershed lands, certain group activities, and commercial filming. 

Commercial Filming Permits
As a general rule, there can be no endangerment or change in the watershed resulting from filming activities. A special use permit must be acquired in advance from Sky Oaks Headquarters, and all fees/charges paid in advance, including estimated supervision charges. Any overpayment will be refunded. Insurance Documents
Evidence of Comprehensive General Liability Insurance policy of at least $1,000,000, naming the District as an additional insured, is required. Also, an Additional Insured Endorsement form must be completed and signed by the film company’s insurance carrier. MMWD’s finance division manager must sign off on the insurance documents.

Film Fees
All fees must be paid in advance and are subject to change.
  • $2,000 / day, or any part of day
  • $1,000 to $2,000 / day for setup in preparation of filming
  • $1,000 to $2,000 / day for takedown, prop removal, or cleanup
  • $2,000 / day for helicopter landing at designated helipad only. Refueling the helicopter on site is not permitted.
  • $100 to $1,000 / day for still photography, depending upon the scope of the project.
  • $116.16 / hour per staff person, on site monitor may be required based on the scope of the project and the determination of the Watershed Superintendent / Manager or his / her designee. This overtime rate shall be adjusted annually based on District costs, including indirect, vehicle rates, and overhead charges.
  • 50% of fees / charges is non - refundable if canceled three or more days prior to scheduled shooting. Entire fees / charges shall be forfeited if canceled within three days prior to scheduled shooting. In addition, if canceled on scheduled shoot date, a minimum of four hours staff time will be charged.

Scouting Locations
Depending upon staff availability, the district shall be reimbursed on an hourly basis for staff time dedicated to scouting for film shoot locations and coordinating same.

Land Use Permits
District lands are open to the public for recreational use, in accordance with the provisions of MMWD's Land Use Regulations, during daylight hours only, beginning at 7 a.m. and ending thirty minutes after sunset.

Research Permits
Thank you for your interest in conducting scientific activities within MMWD lands. The MMWD Board of Directors and staff recognize the unique opportunities for research, monitoring, and biological collecting present within the Mt. Tamalpais Watershed. We wish to encourage efforts aimed at increased understanding of the biota and ecological processes found within the lands and waters we manage. At the same time, we are committed to fulfilling our primary purpose of protecting water quality and the resources entrusted to us.

MMWD’s Collecting and Research Guidelines and Permit Application is to the right. Please complete and return one application for each experiment or activity you would like to conduct.
