Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD) has allowed conventional mountain bikes on fire roads for many years, and with the emergence of new electric bicycles (E-Bikes), MMWD seeks to understand the prevalence of E-bikes, their potential impact on areas already open to conventional bicycles, and develop specific policies related to E-bikes.
E-bikes are currently considered motorized vehicles by MMWD regulations, but objective data is not widely available on their use and potential impacts. State law defines E-bikes as bicycles equipped with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts. To address these issues and conflict, MMWD commissioned an E-bike Community Advisory Committee to provide feedback on the appropriate use of this emerging technology on District lands.
The purpose of this community advisory committee is to develop reasonable and actionable recommendations to address the challenges listed above. Where possible, the CAC will develop recommendations to the MMWD Board of Directors to aid in the Board’s decisions regarding e-bike use.
