Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD) will replace over a quarter of a mile of worn cast iron pipeline installed in 1926 in the City of Larkspur beginning July 2015. There have been numerous leaks along this section of 90-year old pipeline, making it a good candidate for replacement.
MMWD’s pipeline replacement work is being conducted in coordination with the City of Larkspur’s planned road improvements. The project is estimated to be completed in August 2015.
This coordination with the City of Larkspur is an example of MMWD’s commitment to complete infrastructure projects with the highest benefit and least public impact. Welded steel piping will be used for the main due to its increased reliability in the event of an earthquake.
The lowest responsible bid for the project was submitted by Maggiora & Ghilotti, Inc. in the amount of $272,472. Maggiora & Ghilotti, Inc. has completed several pipeline replacement projects for MMWD, and the contractor’s schedule even includes additional time needed to hand-dig around redwood tree roots along the project alignment to prevent damage.
Streets impacted by this project include Madrone Avenue, Bridge Road, and Onyx Street. Both the contractor and MMWD will make every effort to minimize traffic disruptions during construction.
This project aligns with the district’s five-year strategic plan to improve water supply resiliency and maintain facilities and equipment sufficiently. Customers with questions about the project can contact Jeff Ohmart with MMWD’s Engineering Division at 415-945-1574.
