Marin Water to replace more than a mile of aging pipeline along Miracle Mile

Cars pass through a busy intersection.

Marin Water will begin construction this summer in San Rafael to replace aging pipeline along the Miracle Mile corridor, a well-traveled route connecting San Rafael to San Anselmo. The project will occur in two phases and replace more than a mile of pipeline.

The first phase of construction will begin in San Rafael in coordination with the City’s upcoming intersection improvements. During this phase, underground pipeline work will occur on Marquard Avenue, and portions of Second and Fourth streets. A project map is available at marinwater.org/MiracleMilePRP.

This initial phase is estimated to be completed by late summer. Phase 2 will commence after the City’s roadway improvements have been completed, anticipated for sometime next year.

In total, Marin Water plans to replace about 7,000 feet of cast iron pipe with new welded steel pipe. Some sections of the existing pipeline date back as early as 1883, underscoring the age of this critical infrastructure.

Here’s what to expect once construction begins:

  • Traffic impacts: Because this is a heavily traveled commuter route between San Rafael and San Anselmo, motorists should expect weekday traffic impacts between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. and allow extra time for travel. Drivers are asked to follow traffic control signs, reduce speeds, and use caution in active work zones.
  • Parking and access: Temporary street parking restrictions may occur in areas of active construction to maintain traffic flow and pedestrian safety. Street parking will reopen after 5 p.m. each day. Parking lots adjacent to active work areas will remain accessible throughout construction. Businesses and properties along the corridor will remain accessible during construction.
