At its June 18 Watershed Committee/Special Meeting, the Marin Water Board of Directors confirmed a preferred planning scenario to guide the next phase of updates to the District’s Roads and Trails Management Plan (RTMP). The selected scenario will now move forward for further analysis as part of the environmental review process.
The RTMP guides how the District maintains roads and trails on its watershed lands, with a focus on protecting water quality, supporting public access and prioritizing stewardship and restoration across the Mt. Tamalpais Watershed.
As part of this update, the District is reviewing its network of fire roads, formal trails and informal (social) trails to evaluate potential access changes and identify opportunities to enhance natural resource protection, habitat restoration and improve visitor experience.
Community input has been central to the RTMP update process. Since November, Marin Water has hosted two community workshops, a series of site walks in January, February and April, and an open house workshop in May. During the June 18 meeting, District staff presented a summary of community feedback received to date and reviewed key themes identified through the evaluation of three preliminary planning scenarios. That feedback helped inform the Board’s confirmation of the preferred scenario. Additional opportunities for public input are ahead as the District begins environmental review.

- August/September 2026 – Environmental scoping period
Pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act, Marin Water will initiate environmental review for the update to the RTMP. A community meeting will provide the opportunity for interested parties to learn more and provide comments on the scope of environmental issues to be addressed in the Environmental Impact Report.
