Marin City Pipeline Replacement Project

Image shows a residential street with superimposed graphic of a pipeline with the words "Marin City water pipeline replacement."

Marin Water is working to replace aging and leak-prone underground water pipeline along streets in Marin City. More than 3.6 miles of existing cast iron, galvanized steel, and cement water main will be replaced with modern, seismically resilient welded steel pipe with a life expectancy well over 100 years. New service laterals from the main to the service meters will also be replaced as part of this project. Owned by Marin Water, these mains are large underground sections of pipeline that carry treated drinking water from Marin Water’s pumping stations to customer properties. This project will also replace 192 service laterals, which is Marin Water-owned piping that connects the water main to the service meter and subsequent customer-owned piping. The project will occur in two phases, and is expected to conclude in the fall of 2026.

Project Update (Jan. 24, 2025)

Construction is underway and the first phase is expected to be completed in the fall of 2025. The second phase will begin immediately after completion of the first phase.

What to expect

  • Construction will occur on weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Setup and cleanup activities may occur outside of this timeframe.

  • Your water service may be interrupted for short periods of time. If so, Marin Water will notify you 24-48 hours in advance by hanging a notice of the planned water shut-off on your front gate or door. If a medical condition exists which requires that you receive continuous water service, notify us at 415.945.1560 as soon as possible.
  • Marin Water and the project contractor will take all measures possible to minimize inconveniences associated with this project, including noise and traffic delays.
