Prevention measures to protect reservoirs from invasive Golden Mussels

Lake barge pumps on Alpine Lake used to move water to treatment plant

Fish plantings paused at Bon Tempe reservoir

Fish stocking in Bon Tempe reservoir has been temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure to protect the District's water system from potential impacts of an emerging new invasive species threat in California.

In October 2024, Golden Mussels were discovered in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, the first such discovery of this invasive species in North America.  Like other invasive mussels, Golden Mussels can pose a significant threat to water system infrastructure by clogging inlet screens, pumps and other equipment essential to the movement of water through reservoirs and water treatment plants.

Golden Mussels are primarily spread through watercraft, such as boats and rafts, which are not allowed in any of Marin Water’s seven reservoirs.

Please note, the District’s water system is not connected to any affected water bodies nor does Marin Water receive its water supply from any of the agencies currently dealing with Golden Mussels.

More information on Golden Mussels and where they have been found in California is available in the following resources from the California State Department of Fish and Wildlife:
